Sushil Koirala became the 37th Prime Minister of Nepal

Nepali Congress President, Sushil Koirala who was the lone candidate for Prime Minister has been elected Prime Minister of Nepal today( Magh 27, 2070 BS)   He became the 37th Prime Minister of Nepal after the second Constituent Assembly Polls. The leader of Nepal’s largest political party, Sushil Koirala who was the only candidate secured 405 out of 553 Member of Parliament (MP’s) votes.  After voting, Parliament Speaker Surya Bahadur Thapa declared that Koirala had secured majority. After he became Prime Minister, Koirala will replace the bureaucratic government led by Chief   Khil Raj Regmi. He was supported by his own party, the Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist (CPN-UML) and others meanwhile most of Madhes centric parties along with Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party- Nepal voted against him. Prime Minister Koirala, 75, is the sixth head of the government since the country became a republic in 2008, following a peace deal with Maoist rebels in 2006. After winning Prime Minister, he said while having a constitution delivered within a year with good governance would be his government’s priority and he will also make every attempt to strengthen Nepal’s relations with two neighbors China, India and other international community.

He was the fourth member of his family member to become Prime Minister after Matrika Prasad Koirala (1951-5, 1953-55), Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala (1959-60) and Girija Prasad Koirala (1991-94, 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2007-08). Koirala’s name as the Prime Minister candidate was proposed by Nepali Congress Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel and was supported by UML Parliamentary Party leader KP Oli. Koirala who was born in Biratnagar in eastern Nepal in 1939 joined politics in 1954. He became the central committee member of Nepali Congress in 1977 before being appointed General Secretary of Nepali Congress in 1996 and Acting President in 2008. He was being elected the Nepali Congress President in 2010. In his 50 years political career, he has rejected several offers of ministerial posts, as he did not show interest for power and posts. Sushil Koirla is unmarried and is praised for his simple living; gentle nature is former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s cousin.
