Everest Insurance to get new board today

Everest Insurance Company Ltd to get new board on February 13 2013, Thursday after it was taken over by the Insurance Board for stopping work for months. According to Insurance Board, it would be handling over the company management to the new board committee. 10 shareholders have submitted their candidacies for Board member, though an election has been schedule. Niranjan Kumar Tibrewala, Purushottam Raj Bhattarai, Hindu Sanskriti Karki, Rajan Kumar Paudel, Surendra Silwal, Sashi Agarwal, Pawan Kumar Shanghai and Priyanaka Agrawal are the candidates for the seats. Seven of the proposed candidates are likely to be elected unopposed. Among them, 4 are from Khetan group white 2 are from the Riberewala Panel and 1 from the Birendra Shah and Om Prakash Sikaria panel.  Based on the number of shares and proxy collection done recently the board is likely to be coalition said company official.  
The Insurance Board took over Everest Insurance after its management stopped normal business activities for several months. After that Insurance Board dissolved the company board and suspended the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) before sending a three member team to take over the management.

TU implemented semester system in master level

Central Department of Tribhuwan University (TU), Kritipur announced to start semester system of Master Level Program from this season. It was the long debate between TU and student unions whether to start semester system in master level or not. The university and 13 student unions on Monday signed an agreement to go with the new system to regulate the academic session and improving the teaching and learning system of Nepal.  TU decided to open entrance form for the Master’s program for Management, Science, Education and Humanities faculties at the TU Central Campus from Wednesday. According to TU Registrar Chandra Mani Poudel, the new academic session will start from March and the student seats have been limited to 300 per faculty in order to control the admission of students who just join and never attend the class. The three faculties are likely to charge Rs 8000 per semester; however the fee for practical subjects might vary based on their own assessments. TU announced that form will be distributed from Magh 29 to Falgun 15, entrance exam will held on Falgun 17 and result will publish 2 days later.

Sushil Koirala became the 37th Prime Minister of Nepal

Nepali Congress President, Sushil Koirala who was the lone candidate for Prime Minister has been elected Prime Minister of Nepal today( Magh 27, 2070 BS)   He became the 37th Prime Minister of Nepal after the second Constituent Assembly Polls. The leader of Nepal’s largest political party, Sushil Koirala who was the only candidate secured 405 out of 553 Member of Parliament (MP’s) votes.  After voting, Parliament Speaker Surya Bahadur Thapa declared that Koirala had secured majority. After he became Prime Minister, Koirala will replace the bureaucratic government led by Chief   Khil Raj Regmi. He was supported by his own party, the Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist (CPN-UML) and others meanwhile most of Madhes centric parties along with Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party- Nepal voted against him. Prime Minister Koirala, 75, is the sixth head of the government since the country became a republic in 2008, following a peace deal with Maoist rebels in 2006. After winning Prime Minister, he said while having a constitution delivered within a year with good governance would be his government’s priority and he will also make every attempt to strengthen Nepal’s relations with two neighbors China, India and other international community.

Nepali Congress and UML signed 7 points deal

Keeping aside their differences two big political parties,   Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML on Sunday forged a seven point deal paving the way for the formation of new government which will be headed by the NC president Sushil Koirala. According to the seven points agreement between NC and CPN-UML, latter will vote for Koirala on Monday for Prime Minister and also the parliamentary party leader of the NC.  With the election of Koirala, the country will get new elected executive head after 21 months of the dissolution of the first Constitution Assembly (CA). In the same deal two largest party of Nepal have also agreed to endorse the incumbent president Ram Baran Yada and vice president Parmananda Jha through new parliament. This agreement was signed by NC president Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML chairperson Jhalanath Khanal on Sunday. After this agreement UCPN (Maoist) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) said that his party has taken this agreement in positive way and it may play a constructive role in the constitution drafting.

Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA Ballon d'or award 2013

Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been honored as the best football player in the world for 2013 with the FIFA Ballon d'Or award ahead of Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery.  It's the second time he's won the award in the past five years. He was overcome with emotion after being named the world’s best player for 2013 on Monday, which ended Lionel Messi’s dominance of the award.

Although he failed to win any major titles with Real Madrid last season was rewarded for his bumper year having scored 66 goals in 56 games for Real Madrid and Portugal throughout the year as well as a brilliant hat-trick against Sweden in World Cup 2014 playoff match saw him scrape football's most prestigious individual award at FIFA's gala evening in Zurich. Ronaldo won this award in earlier in 2008.

Messi won this award for the past four years, but he missed last six weeks of the year owing injury but he scored 42 goals in 45 games for Barcelona and Argentina, he also won La Liga and Copa Del Rey for Barca. 

Dr. Govinda KC resumes his hunger strike

Senior professor and orthopedic surgeon of Tribhuvan University (TU) Teaching Hospital, Dr. Govinda KC has resumed his hunger strike on Saturday stating that the commitment made to fulfill his demands against interference and politicization in medical sector. As per government’s commitment a new Dean has to be appointed at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the basis of seniority. Dr. KC who broke his 14 day long hunger strike on 24 January after government assurance to his demands said that he was force to resume his strike as government did not take any step to appoint a new Dean at IOM. He had organized a press conference in the Kathmandu before starting his hunger strike on Saturday. Speaking at a press conference he was very unsatisfied with the inference and influence of medical mafia and political interference in medical sector. Hospitals had closed down all operations except emergency services in harmony with his strike.
This is his fourth hunger strike concerning above issues.
A three-member committee included Prof Dr. Krishna Kumar Oil, Dr. Ratendra Shrestha and Dr Deepak Mahara   was formed by the University to propose names of prospective deans. The committee, however, failed to carry out its task, despite negotiations on Friday. Dr. KC resumed his strike after Dr. Deepak Mahara resigned from the committee on Friday.
A four member government taskforce headed by Secretary at Prime Minister’s Office Krishna Hari Baskota had to assure him about his demands to end his 14 day long hunger strike on January 24, however the government commitment expired on Friday.
